Detailer rinsing a white vehicle with a pressure washer

Not always, but the way an automatic wash cleans matters. Systems that touch the paint with brushes or cloth can introduce fine marks, particularly when grit is involved. Repeated marks can leave the finish looking hazy under direct light.

Touchless washing avoids that particular contact, but choosing a wash involves more than looking for the word “touchless.”

Consider the wash process

A touchless wash relies on water pressure and cleaning chemicals. It may leave some stubborn traffic film behind. If your vehicle has a ceramic coating, follow the coating manufacturer’s guidance about wash products and automated washes.

Hand washing also depends on technique. Dirty towels and wash mitts can drag contamination across the finish. What matters is the tools and process, not just who is holding the mitt.

Build better washing habits

Work on cool panels in the shade. Rinse away loose debris before contact washing, use a suitable automotive shampoo, and keep wash media clean. Use separate tools for wheels and paint.

Dry with a clean, suitable microfiber towel or an appropriate blower rather than letting mineral-rich water dry on the surface. Avoid scrubbing stubborn contamination with extra pressure; it may need a targeted treatment.

A coating still needs careful washing

Paying for ceramic coating does not eliminate the need for a sensible wash routine. Ask your installer for instructions you can actually follow, including when the first wash is allowed and which maintenance products are compatible. Not sure it is right for you? Read is ceramic coating worth it?

If you cannot hand wash regularly, say so before choosing protection. Your real routine is a better basis for a recommendation than an ideal routine you will never have time to maintain.

What if you already see swirl marks?

Changing your washing habits can help reduce further damage, but it will not erase existing marks. Have the paint assessed before deciding whether polishing is worthwhile. Our guide to paint correction, scratches, and swirl marks explains what to expect.
